first recipe: umm..beef roast

or moo in the oven. The recipe is very simple and can come out quite ok, if you have the right kind of beef. If you don’t, then you might as well eat a shoe with some spices on, because it is going to taste roughly the same.

Since most of the stuff i make is quick to make, the preparation time is ~15 minutes, and the cooking time is 55 minutes for an electric oven, at 180 degrees Celsius.

Now, Romania can be pretty bloody annoying in regards to beef. It can be expensive (definitely expensive in restaurants), and frickin tough to chew. Oh, for a slice of prime rib…I’ve experimented before with the beef from Carrefour, and only the Polish imported meat was any good, but pricey. However, I’ve recently discovered the “pulpa de manzat” (no clue what it is in English, just as i have no clue what the english translations are) from Cora. It turned out to be a nice surprise, being both good tasting and soft.

For this week, i’ve picked up a piece with nice marbling (the marbling with little veins of fat is really important. it adds to the taste and tenderness).

Ingredients:

most of the ingrediends

  1. 1 piece of beef
  2. some olive oil
  3. Provence spices, available at any store
  4. ground pepper. the pre-ground kind is good, but for a better taste, use a grinder
  5. Arabian grill spices from Mega Image
  6. whatever other spices you like/have. I’ve added some Tandoori BBQ
  7. Fino oven bags. this be important!! i’ve tried roasting the beef in the oven by wrapping it in tin foil before, and it just doesn’t come out the same. If you can’t find separate oven bags, just by some “punga magica” from knorr, and use their bags :D
  8. soy sauce
  9. balsamic vinegar

Procedure:

  1. Pour a little bit of oil over the beef, and spread it evenly over the whole thing, so the spices stick to the meat

    spread the spices evenly

  2. spread the spices evenly on the top side. Don’t pour them directly from the bag/box, pour them instead in one hand, and then use your fingers.
  3. do the same thing to the other side, so the spices are evenly spread
  4. in a small container (cup/bowl/whatever) pour some soy sauce (about a spoonfull) 1.5 spoons of balsamic vinegar. add about 2/3 of a cup of water and some rosemary. Mix well
  5. alternately you can add wine
  6. place the meat in the oven bag
  7. place the meat and the soy/vinegar mixture in the bag

  8. add the soy/vinegar mixture in the bag
  9. close the bag with the provided thingie, and poke a few holes in it
  10. preheat the electric oven to 180 degrees centigrade
  11. place the moo inside for 55 minutes
  12. once it’s done, remove the meat from the oven
  13. open the bag very very carefully. it has hot steam inside
  14. the left over sauce can be mixed with a bit of flour on the stove to make some delicious gravy
  15. enjoy the final product :)

Mission statement :D

oo..that sounds fun. but anyway, welcome to bobes.org..again for very few people. Not sure how i got into blogging again, but hey, why not? Maybe i’ll even stick with it this time.

So on to the what this is part…

This is a blog about food recipes and book reviews. And maybe some other random stuff. But definitely about books and food.

The book reviews are about the books i’ll be reading from now on, and maybe some i’ve read in the past. Whether i’ll review some books, or all of the books i’ll be reading, well, it depends on how lazy i am or not. But it definitely will be about fantasy and sci-fi books..

The food recipes serve two purposes:

1) I don’t have to keep telling people how to make stuff. I’ll just point them to the blog. Hurray for efficiency

2) I forget stuff. I find recipes in random places, sites, books and whatnot, and I modify them, then turn them into edible thingies. Then i forget the modifications, and i have to reinvent the wheel. Not fun.

So anyway, enjoy the site, all the 3 or 4 visitors i’ll be having…

yello

Red Fury (Blood Angels)
James Swallow; Games Workshop 2008

Hmm..how should i put it? this book is not that good. It’s actually kind of bad. the cover is good though :)

The  book is set in the Warhammer 40k gothic/space opera univers, that i’ve been enjoying quite a bit lately. It’s the third in a series of 4, by the same author, detailing the adventures of…yeah..some Blood Angel that i’ve already forgot the name of, and that is entirely not memorable…I’ve tried reading these books..i’ve really tried…i’ve known of the blood angels ever since playing space hulk: vengeance of the blood angels in 96 or 97, whenI had no idea what warhammer was… i’ve sluggishly moved through the first one then the second, hoping it would somehow get better, despite the lack of…basically anything that good…

I know that the space marines are gung-ho, death or the emperor type of dudes, but still..no character development whatsoever? the evil dude is bland. compared to the negative characters of the Eisenhorn and Ravenor trilogies, he is a one sided piece of paper with no depth whatsoever. To complete the picture, the main character is just as bland. He supposedly went through some moral conversion during his initiation, described in, oh, about 2 pages. oh, and he’s somewhat whiny

The plot…umm..uninspired, pretty big holes, and i swear the author has no concept of numbers. Space marines are supermen and so on, but so are chaos marines, right? Then how can 10, 20, 50 dudes take over hundreds? or the entire planet?  This dude subjectively awards victory on battlefields to whomever he decides.

The first two books complete the first arc. And here i was, hoping number three would be better.then i read about 30 pages, and..no change :( ..so after reading a few reviews on amazon, i found myself thoroughly agreeing with them, and i decided that my time would be better spent reading something new. yay :) stay away from this series of books unless you really have a thing for blood angels.
